Over 25 Shots Fired at Kapil Sharma’s Canada Café – 2nd Attack in a Month
Kapil Sharma’s Surrey café in Canada was shot at again with over 25 rounds fired, marking the second attack in under a month. No injuries reported.
Surrey, Canada – In a shocking and brazen act of violence, a café owned by renowned Indian comedian and television host Kapil Sharma was targeted in a shooting for the second time in less than a month. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, saw unidentified assailants firing more than 25 shots at "Kap's Cafe" in Surrey, British Columbia, leaving shattered glass and multiple bullet holes in its wake. Fortunately, staff members who were present inside the establishment at the time escaped uninjured.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among the South Asian diaspora, and has intensified concerns about the rising tide of gang-related violence and extortion rackets targeting Indian-origin businesses in Canada. Police were called to the scene at approximately 4:40 a.m. local time after residents reported hearing a volley of gunfire. Forensic teams and officers from the Surrey Police Service (SPS) quickly cordoned off the area to collect evidence. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the SPS confirmed that in addition to the numerous bullet casings, a "Molotov cocktail-type" device was also discovered at the site, though it did not detonate.
Second Attack and Gang Claims
This recent shooting comes just weeks after the café, which had its soft opening on July 3, was targeted for the first time on July 10. In that initial attack, a shooter, believed to be filming the incident, fired approximately ten rounds at the business. In the aftermath of the first shooting, a social media post had surfaced, with Germany-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi claiming responsibility. Laddi had reportedly cited offensive remarks made about Nihang Sikhs on one of Sharma’s shows as the motive.
Following Thursday's incident, a similar pattern emerged. A new social media post, which has since gone viral, allegedly from gangster Goldy Dhillon—an associate of the infamous Lawrence Bishnoi gang—claimed responsibility. The unverified post threatened that the gang’s “next action” would be in Mumbai, a chilling warning that has prompted Indian law enforcement agencies to launch their own verification efforts. While Surrey Police have not officially confirmed any gang involvement in either shooting, they are not ruling out any potential motives, including links to extortion.
A Worrying Trend of Extortion and Violence
The attacks on Kap's Cafe are part of a larger and deeply troubling trend of violence aimed at the South Asian community in British Columbia and other parts of Canada. In recent years, a number of high-profile shootings and extortion attempts have been reported, targeting prominent members of the community, including businessmen and artists. The Times of India reports that other Punjabi artists, such as singer Karan Aujla and Gippy Grewal, have also been targets of similar attacks in the past.
According to law enforcement, these criminal networks, often with roots in India, have expanded their operations into Canadian territory, using threats and violence to extort money. The situation has become so dire that Canadian leaders, including British Columbia's Premier David Eby, have been urged to designate the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and similar groups as terrorist organizations. Such a designation would grant law enforcement agencies greater powers to investigate, disrupt, and bring an end to this criminal activity. However, some researchers caution that such a move may have downsides, as these groups primarily operate for criminal gain rather than having a clear political or ideological agenda.
Kapil Sharma's Response and Community Impact
Following the first attack, Kapil Sharma had posted a video on his Instagram account expressing his gratitude to Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and other officials who had visited the café to show their support. "United we stand against violence; we are truly grateful," Sharma wrote at the time. The mayor's office had condemned the attack, calling it "completely unacceptable" and reaffirming their commitment to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of all residents.
This latest incident, however, has heightened the sense of fear among locals. Chetan Singh, a resident who lives and works near the café, expressed his concerns to CBC News, stating, "I feel very bad. This is a new café, just recently opened. We are not feeling safe right now." He added that he hopes the police catch the perpetrators soon, as such acts negatively impact society. The repeated attacks have not only caused damage to property but have also instilled a deep sense of insecurity among small business owners, who fear becoming the next target.
The Surrey Police Service is actively investigating both incidents and is asking for the public's help. They have urged anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has dashcam footage from the area to come forward and contact them at 604-599-0502, referencing file number 25-66351. In the meantime, the Surrey police continue to work with their partners to address the ongoing issue of gang violence and organized crime that is casting a shadow over the city.
For now, Kap's Cafe remains a stark symbol of a complex issue, caught between a global celebrity's entrepreneurial dreams and the harsh realities of organized crime. The incident underscores the urgent need for a more concerted effort from both local and international authorities to tackle the transnational criminal networks that are threatening the safety and peace of communities in Canada.
